April 5 – Lecture Series Session 1. Sara Wagar, tribal elder and former principal chief of the Piqua
Shawnee tribe will discuss the impact of the ever-advancing white invasion of the Shawnee homeland
during the latter half of the 1700s on the Shawnee people and their way of life. 5 p.m. Jay Historical
Society. Free and open to the public.
April 5 & 6 – Spring Cultural Arts Classes. Four classes will be offered, including a field trip to
ancient area mounds and enclosures, birch bark baskets, porcupine quill work, and men’s ribbon shirts.
Women’s Building, Jay County Fairgrounds. $75 ($50 NCGLNAC members). All classes are open to
anyone over the age of 12.
April 19 – Academic Conference. Current Research in Great Lakes Native American Culture. Six
nationally-known and respected speakers will present their research on topics relevant to Great Lakes
Native Peoples. $30 includes lunch, students $20. John Jay Center for Learning, Portland. 9 a.m. to 4
p.m. Teachers, students, educators, historians, and general public welcome and encouraged to attend.
May 17 – Children’s Class. Native Americans found everything necessary for life in the world around
them. Dani Tippmann, Miami, will teach children some of the secrets of Miami and everyday life skills.
10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Ages 6 and up welcome. $10 per person. Jay County Public Library.
May 17 – Lecture Series Session 2. John Dunnagan, Miami Vice-Chief and tribal historian, will discuss
Miami tribal history and the struggles of the Miami people in Indiana, their homeland. 5 p.m. Jay
Historical Society. Free and open to the public.
June 7 & 8 – 5th Annual Gathering of Great Lakes Nations Pow Wow. Tri-State Gas Engine and
Tractor Grounds. Celebration of Great Lakes Native American Culture with drums, singers, dancers,
Native American foods, vendors, blanket traders, pre-1840 living history camp. Saturday 10 a.m. to 9
p.m. Sunday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Grand Entries at 1 and 7 p.m. Saturday and 12 noon Sunday. $4 per
person, maximum $15 per car, children under 12 free. Free parking. Public encouraged to join in
celebration. This event is made possible, in part, by Arts Place, Inc., the Indiana Arts Commission, a state
agency, and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.
August 4 – Native American Concert. Location: Bearcreek Farms, Bryant. Award-winning
Cherokee recording artist Michael Jacobs will perform an incredible blend of Native American and
American “roots” music, a mixture of pop, rock, folk and the Native American flute. Tickets: $15 for

August 4 – 8 – Summer Cultural Arts Classes. Week-long workshops will teach beadwork, sterling
silversmithing, personal gourd rattles, antler and bone carving, cedar boxes, women’s traditional dance
and traditional living skills. Other classes are not finalized. $95 ($70 NCGLNAC members) for each 2 1⁄2
day class. All classes are open to anyone over the age of 12. Women’s Building, Jay County
Fairgrounds.
August 4 – 8 – Children’s Cultural Arts Classes. Week-long workshop for children ages 6 and up.
Children will learn about Great Lakes Native American peoples that lived in the Jay county area in the
past, and still live in Jay County today. Different teacher each day featuring crafts, art work, games,
storytelling and folklore. $15 per day includes lunch. All classes open to anyone 6 and up. Women’s
Building, Jay County Fairgrounds.
September 13 – Cultural Arts Class. Nita Norcross will teach beaded, porcupine quill drop earrings
seen so often at pow wows. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Class is open to anyone over the age of 12. $25 per person
includes all materials. Jay Public Library.
November 1 – Lecture Series Session 3. Robin McBride Scott will discuss the fur trade era and its
impact on the material culture of the Great Lakes native peoples. Jay Historical Society. 5 p.m. Free and
open to the public.
November 1 & 2 – Fall Friendship Fire. A gathering of members and friends for education, fellowship,
site tours, a small craft project and lectures. Anyone over the age of 12 is welcome to attend. $30 per
person includes Saturday evening dinner. Women’s Building, Jay County Fairgrounds.
